Expert Rankings

The ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ monitor was received very positively among expert reviewers, primarily thanks to its high-resolution 2K display and 170 Hz overclockable refresh rate. They also lauded its out-of-the-box color accuracy. However, they weren’t happy with its low native contrast ratio, sub-par black levels, and poor viewing experience in the dark.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ is a mid-range gaming monitor that was first released in 2021. Ranking among the top-rated computer monitors in its range, this gaming display sports a WQHD (2560 x 1440) panel with an overclockable refresh rate of 170 Hz. The brand claims that its IPS panel has a nominal response time of just 1 ms, which is comparable to the other top gaming monitors in the industry. In addition, ASUS touts the presence of a blue light filter that prevents eye strain, just like the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE. The brand also includes one DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI 2.0 ports, one 3.5 mm audio jack, two USB type A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and one USB type B upstream port, like the ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQ.

Consensus

our Verdict

The ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ mostly received positive reactions from testers. Reviewers from Rtings.com loved its high 1440p resolution, which they believe, unlike the Philips 279P1 or other similar 4K monitors, is the sweet spot for most gaming PCs at a playable frame rate on its 170 Hz panel. They also liked the color accuracy of this monitor, as they did not notice any visible inaccuracies in their tests as they did with the same brand’s ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A.

However, critics from Tom’s Hardware weren’t pleased with its native contrast ratio, which they measured at just 1121:1 in their tests. If you’re looking for a monitor that delivers an excellent dark room viewing experience, something like the ASUS TUF VG27VQ would be a far better option.

ReasonS to Buy

  • The high native resolution of 2560p x 1440p
  • Spectacularly accurate colors
  • The supremely high refresh rate of 170 Hz
  • Superb ergonomics and build quality
  • Extremely wide viewing angles

Reason to Avoid

  • Sub-par native contrast ratio
  • The peak brightness could’ve been better
  • So so black levels
  • The lackluster viewing experience in the dark
  • No presence of HDMI 2.1 ports

The Samsung Odyssey G7 quite easily beats the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ gaming monitor’s 170 Hz display, owing to its 240 Hz panel. Its VA panel also delivers a far better native contrast ratio (3913:1 versus ASUS’ 1121:1). However, the XG27AQ easily beats the former model in terms of color gamut in both SDR and HDR (Samsung’s 97.9% sRGB, 83.2% Adobe RGB, 91% DCI-P3, and 67.6% Rec. 2020 coverage against ASUS’ 99.5% sRGB, 84.6% Adobe RGB, 93.3% DCI-P3, and 69.8% Rec. 2020 coverage).

Although the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQ gaming monitor’s native 170 Hz display marginally edges out the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD’s 165 Hz display, they perform very similarly in most regards, as both feature IPS panels with wide viewing angles. However, the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD gaming monitor has a slightly brighter panel that reaches a peak brightness of 367 nits against ASUS’ 349 nits.
