Product Snapshot

Overview

The Dell G2724D is a budget gaming monitor released in 2023. It has an LCD display with an IPS panel featuring a 400-nit peak brightness and 1000:1 contrast ratio. Equipped with HDMI and two DisplayPort sockets, the G2724D, like the best computer monitors, provides adjustable height, orientation, swivel, and tilt angle. It also comes with a VESA mounting interface.

It’s similar to the best gaming monitors with a competitive 165 Hz refresh rate and VRR compatibility (NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync). Its three-year warranty covers panel replacement, and it incorporates an LED edge light system and Low Blue Light technology. For a monitor with a higher 240 Hz refresh rate, read our Alienware AW2723DF review.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Dell G2724D is a versatile monitor suitable for movies, gaming, and work, given its 400-nit peak brightness, expansive SDR color gamut, and excellent color accuracy. Despite its low contrast ratio resulting in dull blacks and the HDR color gamut issues with tone mapping, the monitor offers a low input lag (3.3 ms) for enhanced control. However, its response time (6.5 ms) isn’t as good.

Vertical viewing at 28° causes color washout, but at 165 Hz, the monitor effectively handles fast action scenes, aided by VRR support to reduce tearing. The lack of HDMI 2.1 means no 4K at 120 Hz, and the lack of USB ports eliminates firmware update options. Nevertheless, it remains a steal for gamers on a budget.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Great image quality
    • The all-rounder Dell G2724D works well for gaming, office use, and movies. Thanks to its 400 nits peak brightness, there is no harsh daytime glare. It has a broad SDR color gamut and delivers life-like, vibrant imagery with accurate colors pre and post-calibration.

  • Low Input lag
    • The monitor is super responsive to commands during competitive gaming due to its low 3.3 ms input lag at 165 Hz, which is among the best we’ve tested. But it gets slightly higher at 60 Hz (9.0 ms).

  • High native refresh rate
    • You’ll experience seamless and tear-free gameplay with the 165 Hz native refresh rate and VRR compatibility (FreeSync and G-SYNC).

Reason to Avoid

  • Subpar contrast ratio and HDR color gamut
    • Blacks appear gray due to the low contrast ratio (1000:1), and the local dimming feature worsens the contrast levels by unintentionally brightening the entire screen.

  • Okay response time
    • Its response times of 6.5 ms at 165 Hz, 7.6 ms at 120 Hz, and 8.2 ms at 60 hz are generally acceptable for casual gaming and multimedia applications. But for intense competitive gaming, a minimum range would be under 5 ms.

  • No HDMI 2.1 and USB ports
    • Console gamers won’t appreciate the monitor’s inability to support 4K at 120 Hz since there is no HDMI 2.1. Moreover, you can’t update its firmware as it lacks a USB port. For a monitor with a built-in USB-C docking station, read our Philips 329P1H review.

While both the HP Omen 27QS and the Dell G2724D are entry-level gaming monitors, the G2724D edges ahead by downscaling 4K signals, making it more suitable for console gaming than the 27QS. Additionally, it stands out with excellent ergonomics for office settings and has a faster response time (6.5 ms) for reducing motion glare compared to the 27QS (8.4 ms). For a detailed breakdown, read our HP Omen 27QS review.

The Innocn 27M2V outshines the Dell G2724D with its significantly higher peak brightness of 1200 nits, far surpassing the G2724D’s 400 nits. It also boasts a superior HDR color gamut and comes with USB A, B, and C ports, unlike the G2724D. However, the G2724D has slightly better horizontal viewing angles than the 27M2V.
