Expert Rankings

The premium TCL 6 Series 8K Roku is outstanding for immersive gaming with its low input lag, 120 Hz refresh rate, and VRR. Its high brightness and contrast make it great for movies and sports, but group viewing isn’t optimal owing to the narrow viewing angle.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The TCL 6 Series 8K Roku is a premium 8K QLED TV launched in 2021, and it has 33 million pixels, which is four times the pixels on a 4K TV. The TV has a VA panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate, and similar to the best TVs, it has four HDMI ports (1 eARC) and supports HDMI 2.1, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. The presence of ALLM and VRR makes it compatible with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it has Roku built-in.

It uses TCL’s Smart 8K Upscaling technology for picture upscaling and works with Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa for voice control. Like the best 4K TVs, there is AirPlay compatibility, and the medium-sized remote has voice control and shortcut buttons for popular streaming platforms. Consensus

ReasonS to Buy

  • Excellent picture quality
    • This TV is great for movies and sports and excellent for gaming because of its wide and vibrant color gamut that exceeds 1 billion colors with 90.95% coverage on DCI P3 xy. Dark scene viewing is good, displaying minimal blooming and deep, uniform blacks (std. deviation of 0.829%).

  • High brightness and contrast
    • The TV suits well-lit spaces thanks to its superior reflection handling and high peak brightness of 1161 nits, which ranks in the top third of our tested TVs. And nighttime viewing is clear thanks to the 134,133:1 contrast, which is among the best we have observed.

  • Low-tested response time and input lag
    • Visuals remain mostly smooth with a 3.6 ms response time, although there could be slight blurriness with fast-moving objects in dark scenes. Gaming is exceptionally responsive, boasting a 6.2 ms input lag (4K at 120 Hz), which sits near the top of its class.

  • 120 Hz refresh rate and VRR
    • Visuals remain smooth and lag-free thanks to the 120 Hz refresh rate, and screen tearing is absent because the VRR ranges from under 20 Hz to 120 Hz.

Reason to Avoid

  • Narrow viewing angle
    • The TV’s VA panel makes viewing angles rather narrow, with colors washing out at just 21°, which is poor for wide seating arrangements.

  • Mild blooming
    • Although not distracting, there is mild blooming during dark sequences.

The TCL 6 Series 8K Roku and the TCL QM850G QLED have impressively low input lag. But while the QM850G outperforms the 6 Series at 4K at 60 Hz (14.2 ms vs 15.1 ms), the 6 Series is better at 4K at 120 Hz (6.2 ms vs 6.3 ms). Both the TVs have VRR, but the QM850G has a wider range that goes from under 20 to 144 Hz, while the 6 Series extends only up to 120 Hz. For another 8K resolution TV that’s great for gaming, read this Hisense U80G review.

The TCL 6 Series 8K Roku’s peak brightness of 1154 nits is higher than the TCL Q750G QLED’s 926 nits. Both TVs have an excellent color gamut, but with a standard deviation of 0.430%, the Q750’s black uniformity is significantly greater than the 6 Series’ 0.829%. The TCL 6 Series 8K Roku has a great contrast ratio of 134,133:1, but the Samsung S95C OLED is much further ahead with an inf:1 contrast. The S95C’s OLED display also ensures zero blooming, unlike the 6 Series. As for the viewing angle, the S95C’s incredibly wide viewing angle washes out at 70°, but the 6 Series washes out at just 21°. For a brighter display with spectacular reflection handling, read our Samsung QN90C Neo QLED series review.
