Experts were pleased with the versatility of the Shark ION P50 Upright. They lauded it for its exceptional bare floor and carpet cleaning performance and also appreciated its maneuverability.

However, its array of attachments is limited, and its suction force is low.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Shark ION P50 Upright is an entry-level upright vacuum released in 2018. It has a removable battery, and like most of the best vacuum cleaners, it is also equipped with an anti-allergy HEPA filter that filters out up to 99.999% of allergens.

The P50 has a decent 0.6-liter dirt canister that is larger than the 0.1-liter dirt bin on the Shark WS620, which we covered in our Shark Wandvac System WS620 review. Since it is also cordless, moving it around is very easy.

It is also fairly quiet, producing about 68.5 decibels on bare floors and 71.1 decibels on low-pile carpets. Owners will be able to choose between two cleaning modes (Floor and Carpet), but the P50 also has an ION BOOST power setting that can be used to increase suction power.

Its 57-minute battery life is also good, and since it is removable, owners can opt to buy two for a longer runtime.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Shark ION P50 pleased experts with its impressive cleaning performance across various surfaces. Reviewers from Rtings were delighted with how it cleaned bare floors, as their test results showed that it cleared up 91% and 97% of large and small debris consecutively.

They also tested it on rugs, where it picked up 85% of large debris from high-pile carpets and 91% of small debris from low pile rugs. This made it a better fit for rugs and hard floor cleaning than the Shark R76, whose test results are included in our Shark ION Robot R76 review.

Experts from Best Cordless Vacuum Guide liked that they could detach the dust canister and vacuum under furniture. It may not be as portable as testers wanted – see the Shark ION W1 WANDVAC vacuum review – but they still found it easy to maneuver.

However, reviewers didn’t like the limited array of attachments that the P50 shipped with. They also complained that its 0.36 kPa suction force was low and that many of its parts require maintenance.

The Shark ION P50 has a larger 0.6-liter dirt compartment compared to the Shark ION F80, which, as is evident in our Shark ION F80 review, has a dirt bin that can hold about 0.28-liters of debris. However, the Shark ION F80 has a longer battery life of 77 minutes compared to the P50, which has a runtime of only 57 minutes. Still, the F80’s 420-minute charge time is much longer than the P50, which takes only 198 minutes to charge.

The Shark ION P50 Upright has a 0.6-liter dirt canister that is larger than the 0.35-liter dirt bin on the Dyson V7 Animal. The P50 also has a longer 57-minute runtime compared to the V7 Animal, which lasts only 33 minutes. However, the V7 is lighter to handle, as it weighs only 5.22 pounds compared to the P50, which weighs 12.13 pounds.
