The budget Amazon Echo Pop delivers impressive value with its well-balanced sounds, distinct vocals, and satisfactory portability. However, its modest volume output and absence of low bass may deter EDM listeners, and its mediocre build quality and no built-in battery make it less travel-friendly.

Product Snapshot

Overview

Launched in 2023, the Amazon Echo Pop is a budget Alexa-enabled front-firing speaker with four color options (charcoal, glacier white, lavender bloom, and midnight teal). Like the best speakers, its dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5GHz) enables smart home compatibility (via Bluetooth Low Energy Mesh and Matter controller), and the Bluetooth connection has a 305.1 ft range, but there is no built-in battery. It is compatible with Fire OS, Android, and iOS devices and has a lightweight 196g body common among the best Bluetooth speakers. The speaker includes a three-microphone pickup and integrates with the Amazon Alexa app.

Consensus

our Verdict

The affordable Amazon Echo Pop delivers balanced sounds and crisp vocals in small-sized rooms. Securing a rank in the top third of our certified, tested list, its high maximum frequency response (19900Hz) reproduces lively mids and treble. However, the high 113.1Hz minimum frequency response is lacking in heavy bass, and it can’t push out loud sounds with its low 79.1dB volume output, both ranking near the bottom of the same list.

While the compact Echo Pop is movable within the home, its lack of built-in battery tethers it to a power outlet and limits on-the-go portability. The plastic build quality, though durable, feels somewhat cheap, and the fabric can easily tear. And since there are no water or dust resistance ratings, placing it in a kitchen or bathroom is risky.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Good sound quality
    • The Amazon Echo Pop is designed for listening to pop music and podcasts at home, preferably in small to average-sized rooms, and delivers well-balanced sounds and clear vocals.

    • It reproduces bright, detailed mids and treble tones, and its maximum frequency response (19900 Hz) is high, ranking in the top third of our certified, tested speakers. For a speaker with well-rounded mids, check our Ultimate Ears Megablast review.

  • Satisfactory portability
    • It is compact enough for room-to-room portability but less travel-friendly since it requires a wired connection to work.

Reason to Avoid

  • No built-in battery
    • The absence of a built-in battery translates to reduced portability and convenience.

  • Middling build quality
    • Its all-plastic build is designed to last but doesn’t feel premium, and its fabric is prone to tears.

    • Additionally, it lacks dust or water resistance ratings, making it unsuitable for placing in the bathroom or kitchen.

  • Poor bass and low volume
    • Considering its high minimum frequency response (113.1 Hz), EDM and hip-hop fans might not appreciate the lack of deep rumbles in the low bass. It ranks in the bottom third of our verified, tested speakers.

    • Moreover, it’s not powerful enough to get very loud (79.1 dB), ranking in the bottom third of our certified, tested products. However, that is understandable, given its small size.

The budget Amazon Echo Pop is built for small rooms, while the premium Amazon Echo Studio’s higher volume output and more expansive soundstage make it better suited for roomier spaces. The Echo Studio also has a better lower frequency extension to accommodate low rumbling sounds and features a 3.5 mm AUX port for wired connectivity. However, the Echo Pop’s mic has superior ambient noise performance for hearing commands clearly in loud environments. For a more expensive battery-powered alternative, read our Amazon Tap review.

Designed for small rooms, the Amazon Echo Pop and Google Nest Mini speakers offer tremendous value at their wallet-friendly prices. The Echo Pop gets a touch louder and has a slightly better low-frequency extension for deeper bass sounds. Moreover, you can customize sounds with its graphic EQ, while the Nest Mini only allows bass and treble adjustments. However, unlike the Echo Pop, the Nest Mini features tactile buttons for playback adjustment and taking calls.

Unlike the budget Amazon Echo Pop, the premium Apple HomePod 2nd Generation features a room correction tool that tweaks its output depending on your room’s acoustics. The HomePod 2nd Generation boasts superior controls, and a more accurate frequency response and is compatible with Apple AirPlay. The Echo Pop, however, offers more customization options with its three-band Graphic EQ. For a good soundbar that sits between the Echo Pop and HomePod in terms of price, read this TCL Alto R1 Roku TV Wireless Soundbar review.

The newer Amazon Echo Pop shares features similar to its predecessor, the Amazon Echo Dot Gen 4, with just a few differences. They both are compact Alexa-enabled speakers, but the Echo Pop’s half-sphere design is slightly smaller than the Echo Dot’s full sphere. Moreover, the newer model features a 3-band graphic EQ for controlling bass, mids, and treble range. Unlike the Echo Pop, the Echo Dot Gen 4 features motion and temperature sensors, and it houses seven microphones, compared to the Echo Pop’s mere three mics.
