The AOC 24G2 is a budget display that pleased testers with its 144Hz refresh rate and rapid response time, despite being outmatched by the Acer Nitro XV252Q on both accounts. They also agreed that it was great for casual gaming. However, they were not too happy with its poor viewing angles and lack of support for HDR content.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The AOC 24G2 is an entry-level display released in 2020 that has a decent 144Hz refresh rate for smooth gameplay. It also has a 1080p screen resolution for admirable image clarity, and despite this not being common with a majority of the best computer monitors (and also being fairly low for premium gaming monitors), it is an attribute it shares with the Acer Nitro XV340CK. Its color accuracy is also pretty good thanks to a Delta E score of 1.2 before calibration, but like most, its score gets as good as 0.38 after calibration. The display is excellent at reflection handling thanks to its matte screen finish and can also be easily adjusted thanks to its impressive ergonomics. It is not as lightweight and easy to move around with as the AOC i1601FWUX, but it does have a low 5ms input lag and a rapid 8.1ms response time.

Consensus

our Verdict

Reviewers have hailed the AOC 24G2 as an excellent choice for buyers on a tight budget. Product reviewers from Games Radar felt that casual gamers would appreciate its 144Hz refresh rate since, during their tests, they found out that this was enough to deliver smooth transitions, and thanks to its rapid 8.1ms response time, they didn’t come across any motion blur during fast-action scenes. Experts from Rtings were also pleased with how well the display handled reflections during their experiments and attributed this to its matte screen finish. Testers also liked that the display had both FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility and that it was also flicker-free – a feature that it has in common with the AOC CQ27G1.

Unfortunately, they were not pleased with the 24G2’s viewing angles, as they noticed that the image significantly deteriorated when viewed at an angle. They also didn’t like its lack of support for HDR content. If these shortcomings are too much of a compromise, buyers might want to consider the Acer Nitro XF243Y as an alternative.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Rapid response time
  • Excellent reflection handling
  • Flicker-free display
  • Great ergonomics
  • Low input lag

Reason to Avoid

  • No support for HDR content
  • Narrow viewing angles
  • Poor contrast

The AOC 24G2 and the AOC 24G2U are very similar as far as features and performance are concerned. They both have dual HDMI 1.4 ports and a 144Hz refresh rate, but the only thing that differentiates the two is that the U variant is sold in Europe and the other in the US and other parts of the world.

Another monitor that closely resembles the AOC 24G2 is the AOC 24G2E, and the two are different in minor ways. The 24G2E can render HDR content while the 24G2 can not, and despite having similar IPS panel types, the 24G2E does not feature any lighting at the back and is only tilt adjustable.

While the AOC 24G2 and the Asus TUF Gaming VG2419 have a similar 24-inch screen size and a 1080p resolution, the Asus emerges as the better pick for gamers thanks to its higher 165Hz refresh rate compared to the 24G2’s 144Hz, and faster 5.7ms response time compared to the AOC’s 8.1ms.

The AOC 24G2 was released in 2020, a year earlier than the Gigabyte G24F. The two are pretty much substitutes for each other, but the G24F is a slightly better pick for gamers because of its three USB ports, support for HDR, and advanced gaming features. On the flip side, the 24G2 has better ergonomics, and at 374 nits, it gets a lot brighter compared to the G24F’s 300 nits. They both have a wide color gamut courtesy of a matching 99% sRGB color space coverage, so they can both deliver vivid pictures when playing SDR content.
