Overview

The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 is a top-tier quad-band 802.11ax with a 6E WiFi router and many built-in gaming features just like the market’s best routers. It also runs on WPA2 or WPA3 for security, supports MU-MIMO, has 256 MB of flash memory, and offers a 2.4 GHz band, two 5 GHz bands, a 6 GHz band, and 8 antennas. Its mesh networking support, built-in network security tools, and gaming features, and bandwidth priority are manageable through the dedicated mobile app or web interface. It has two USB ports and 6 wired LAN ports (with link aggregation for both LAN and WAN). Users can expand the network into a mesh system and expand coverage by adding more units. Consensus

our Verdict

The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 is a quad-band router made with gamers in mind. It comes with hyper-fast close-range WiFi speeds that max out at 701 Mbps on a 5 GHz band. Upload speeds are also impressive, 789 Mbps at 5 GHz and 154 at 2.4 GHz, which rank in the top 5% of the category. For a gaming router, it also has an impressive range of coverage, with the signal reaching up to 156 feet before dropping out.

The design itself is great for supporting external devices. It has 2 USB inputs and 6 LAN ports with the link aggregation option. Users also have trouble setting it up, as they can choose to create networks and manage settings through the ASUS Mobile app or web interface. They can establish guest networks, manage parental controls, and adjust security features here. However, the router lacks key smart features like voice assistant connectivity.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Good WiFi Upload/Download Speed
    • The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 has a very good download speed, making it great for gaming and streaming 4k and 8k content. On a 5 GHz band, it clocks in at 639 Mbps; on a 2.4 GHz, it’s 112 Mbps. In both respects, it ranks in the top 25% of routers.

    • Its upload speed is even better, measuring 789 Mbps on a 5 GHz band and 154 on a 2.4 GHz band, which is in the top 5% in both respects.

  • Easy to Setup and Configure
    • There’s no trouble setting up the app, as users can use either the mobile app or the web interface. The setup process takes 5-10 minutes in total.

    • Users also get to update firmware, adjust parental controls and security features, and set up great networks easily through the intuitive app.

  • Impressive Range of Coverage
    • The router range is enough to reach far-out spaces, as tests show the connection  maxes out at 156 feet.

Reason to Avoid

  • Poor Latency
    • The router struggles to make rapid connections between devices. Its latency is 69 ms, which is in the bottom 10% of the category.

The ASUS RT-AC66U is a slower router than the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000. The ROG is a gaming-oriented router whose maximum 5 GHz download speed comes in at 639 Mbps, whereas the RT-AC66U maxes out at 339 Mbps. However, the RT-AC66U is better for large home coverage, as it has an impressive 300 range before dropping out, and the ROG drops out at 156 feet. However, the ROG is easier to use and comes with a gaming-centric mobile app, while the RT-AC66U can only be managed over the web interface.

If you’re looking for a more affordable but still impressive gaming router, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 is a formidable opponent to the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000. The ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 is a quad-band router, compared to the AX6000’s dual-band. Speed is a close race. The GT-AXE16000 has a download speed on a 5 GHz band clocked in at 639 Mbps, while the AX-6000 measures 840 Mbps. But keep in mind the AX-6000 costs less than half the price. The Linksys Hydra Pro 6 is a high-performing home WiFi router, while the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 is made with gaming in mind. The ASUS is a quad-band router, whereas the Linksys only operates on two bands. The Linksys also lacks certain key features, like multi-gig ports and network security software, and the ASUS has both. In terms of download speed, the ASUS is superior, boasting a 639 Mbps speed on 5GHz, whereas Linksys comes in at 510 Mbps. The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 is an updated version of the router that came out a year prior, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000. It operates as a quad-band router, given it has two 5 GHz bands, while the GT-AXE11000 only has one. The main difference is that the interface for the GT-AXE11000 is more prone to issues and bugs than its successor. However, the predecessor’s download speed is faster than the GT-AXE16000. The GT-AXE11000 clocked in at 1,401 Mbps download speed on a 5 GHz band, compared to the GT-AXE16000’s speed of 639 Mbps.
