The ASUS ROG Strix XG16AHPE portable gaming monitor garnered a ton of praise from critics regarding gaming. They were pleased with its high refresh rate display for gaming, and their battery life tests yielded impressive results. But, they were let down by its sub-par native contrast ratio, black levels, and lack of HDR.

Consensus

our Verdict

Our group of vetted reviewers almost unanimously praised the ASUS ROG Strix XG16AHPE portable monitor for gaming, thanks to its advanced gaming features. Product reviewers from PCMag loved its built-in 7800mAh battery, which provided similar life to the brand’s claims in their tests. Just like the ASUS TUF VG27VQ monitor, they also measured its input lag at a meager 4 ms. They also loved the extremely wide viewing angles of its IPS display.

Still, editors at Rtings.com weren’t very pleased with the lack of 10-bit color on this display and its native contrast ratio, which they measured at just 1261:1, just like the ASUS ProArt PA148CTV monitor. This hurt its black levels and viewing experience in the dark in their tests. They also heavily disliked its lack of HDMI 2.1 ports for next-gen gaming consoles (e.g., the Xbox Series S, the Xbox Series S, and the PS5) and graphics cards, as it only has one micro-HDMI 1.4 port that doesn’t even support G-Sync throughput over it. They were also highly disappointed by its limited SDR color gamuts of just 77.7% (Adobe RGB coverage), which prevented it from displaying high dynamic range content in their tests.

ReasonS to Buy

  • It comes with a built-in high-capacity 7800mAh battery
  • Exceptionally low input lag and response time
  • Supremely wide viewing angles
  • Extremely sturdy built-in fold-out kickstand
  • Native 144 Hz display refresh rate

Reason to Avoid

  • It does not have HDMI 2.1
  • Limited to only 8-bit color
  • No presence of Black Frame Insertion feature
  • Limited color gamuts
  • Mediocre native contrast ratio and black levels

Slightly larger 17-inch screen size aside (compared to XG16’s 15.6-inch display), the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE portable gaming monitor surpasses the ASUS ROG Strix XG16AHPE (the monitor on this review) with refresh rate, as the former model features a 240 Hz screen compared to the XG16’s 144 Hz. However, the smaller model does leave it behind when it comes to peak brightness, as the XG16’s screen can reach up to 295 nits of real scene sustained brightness in a 100% window, compared to the XG17’s 277 nits, which also helps its outdoor visibility under direct sunlight.

The ASUS ROG Strix XG16AHPE portable monitor has a larger 15.6-inch screen size against Dells 14 inch panel, and ASUS’s monitor features a way faster native refresh rate (144 Hz versus Dell’s meager 60 Hz) and response time (3 ms versus Dell’s 6 ms), support for NVIDIA’s G-Sync, and better ergonomics.
