The Brother MFC-L8905CDW provides unbeatable value for its mid-range price, featuring exceptionally fast print speeds, high-quality prints, monochrome scans, and high page yield. However, grainy color scans and average running costs are downsides, not dealbreakers.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Brother MFC-L8905CDW is a mid-range, all-in-one color laser printer built for small to medium-sized businesses. It has a substantial 4500-page yield in black (reaching 8000 with higher-yield cartridges) and a 4000-page color yield. Its 2400 x 600 DPI resolution is good for printing text, but images aren’t clear and detailed.

The printer’s 1200 x 2400 DPI scan resolution accurately reproduces monochrome documents, but you’ll notice a somewhat grainy texture in colored scans. While it’s mediocre at digitizing photos, the ultra-fast 23.15 PPM monochrome and 18 PPM color print speed ranks at the top of our verified, tested printers, making it suitable for fast-paced bulk printing. However, its average running costs (2.75 cents/page) are placed midway among our certified, tested printers.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Good print quality (text)
    • The Brother MFC-L8905CDW printer is well-suited for swift-moving work conditions at small offices. Its 2400 x 600 DPI ensures precise details, but only while printing text documents.

  • Fast printing speeds
    • The 23.15 monochrome and 18 PPM color print speeds are fast and rank among the top in our certified, tested products. These speeds will appropriately meet the demands of fast-moving work environments.

  • Excellent monochrome scan quality
    • With a 1200 x 2400 DPI scan resolution, it meticulously records every minute detail in black and white documents. However, it’s subpar for photo scanning.

  • Economic running costs
    • The 2.75 cents per page printing cost is economical, provided that your printing frequency is moderate. It ranks in the middle of our verified, tested list.

Reason to Avoid

  • Low-quality image prints
    • Images are of low quality in monochrome and color since its 2400 x 600 DPI resolution isn’t adequate to bring out fine details.

    • Its 9.02 dE color accuracy is among the worst in our certified, tested printers, as colors do not accurately match the original documents. For another multifunctional color laser printer with higher quality printing, read this Canon Color MF656Cdw review.

  • Grainy color scans
    • The color scans showcase a slightly grainy texture—a downside for professionals who need high-quality reproductions.

The all-in-one Brother MFC-L8905CDW is more suitable for small offices because it supports print, scan, fax, and copy functions, while the Brother L2325DW only offers mono printing. The L8905CDW also features a user-friendly color touchscreen for easy navigation and has slightly lower print costs. However, the L2325DW has slightly faster mono print speeds suitable for busy spaces. To learn more, check our Brother HL-L2325DW review.

The Brother MFC-J4335DW inkjet printer and Brother MFC-L8905CDW laser printer are both great for families and small offices. The L8905CDW offers faster print speeds and has a convenient automatic duplex printing and scanning function. It also includes additional connectivity options with an Ethernet port and external storage support. However, the J4335DW’s higher print resolution is better at reproducing small details, its printing costs are lower, and it has better color accuracy for casual photo printing.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e and Brother MFC-L8905CDW have similar black-only print speeds and printing costs, but the L8905CDW’s faster color print speed and higher page yield are better suited for busy work environments. It also boasts superior scan quality, and while both aren’t ideal for color reproduction, the OfficeJet Pro 9025e fares slightly better.  Read this HP Smart Tank 7602 review for a model with internet faxing.
