Critics praised the Doss SoundBox Plus’s decent build quality and long battery life. They liked that it was portable, and its capacitative touch controls were easy to use. Still, they complained that its bass was relatively low and that it didn’t have a companion app. Its lack of WiFi connectivity and speakerphone functionality was also not great.

Product Snapshot

Overview

First released in late 2019, the Doss SoundBox Plus is an entry-level Bluetooth speaker that offers up to 20 hours of playback time at moderate volume and with lighting switched off. Its long battery life and RGB lighting make it stand out compared to the top-rated speakers in the industry, and weighing only 1.4 pounds, it is pretty lightweight. The SoundBox Plus can be set up to work with voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Siri, but since this feature is not built-in, this can only work after the phone is paired with the speaker through Bluetooth. Speaking of which, the speaker has adequate Bluetooth connectivity, with a range of 169 ft. This may not compare well to other highly rated Bluetooth speakers, but it is good enough for lag-free playback. It also has an IPX4 rating for water resistance, making it ideal for outdoor use. Suppose you’re looking for a speaker that’s designed for indoor use, our Google Home Max review might be of interest since it is wired and also has speakerphone functionality and WiFi connectivity – aspects missing on the DOSS SoundBox Plus.

Consensus

our Verdict

Expert testers lauded the Boss SoundBox Plus as a well-made speaker with easy-to-use controls at the top, excellent battery life, and clear sound production. Other testers also appreciated its RGB lighting and were also pleased with its build quality. The Bushnell Wingman is worth a look if you can do without RGB lights. Check it out on our Bushnell Wingman review. Reviewers from Rtings also commended it for its good vocal reproduction and portability.

However, testers noted that the speaker struggled to produce a low, thumpy bass after routing audio from music and videos through to it. Therefore, bass lovers may want to check out our Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 6 review. Testers were also not impressed with the lack of a companion app and were, therefore, unable to make sound quality adjustments. In contrast, the Denon Home 350, which we looked at in our Denon Home 350 review, allows users to configure its bass and treble.

Buyers trying to decide between the DOSS SoundBox Plus and the Anker Soundcore 2 will have to mainly consider factors such as battery life and build quality since the SoundBox Plus has a 10.3-hour battery life and the Soundcore 2 lasts longer, at about 15 hours. The SoundBox Plus is water resistant, but the Soundcore 2 is better since it is submersible. However, the SoundBox Plus has RGB lighting while the Soundcore 2 does not.
