The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is a wide-format printer for families and offices. It delivers excellent value with its superior print quality, large page yield, and low running costs, but the missing ADF is a dealbreaker.

Product Snapshot

Overview

Launched in 2021, the Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is an upper mid-range wide-format SuperTank with print, copy, and scan support. You get automatic duplex printing, but there’s no auto duplex scanning or automatic document feeder (ADF).

The input tray has a 170-sheet capacity, which is less than what you’ll find on the best printers, but the ET-8550 can print on A3, A3+, A4, A5, A6, letter, legal, and tabloid-sized papers and matte and glossy paper types. There is a 4.3” touchscreen display that’s adjustable, and as seen on the best all-in-one printers, connectivity includes Ethernet, USB to computer, external storage, SD card, WiFi, WiFi Direct, AirPrint, and Mopria.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is an upper mid-range, wide-format SuperTank inkjet ideal for families and offices. It can print in many formats, and its 5760 x 1440 DPI print resolution is among the best-in-class, ensuring exceptional detail in color prints. The color accuracy is average at 6.48 dE, but the wide color gamut and oversaturation result in visually pleasing colors.

Scan quality is exceptional (1200 DPI), with text appearing sharp and images having higher contrast, but ironically, scanning features are subpar because there’s no ADF for convenience, and scanning is slow (2 PPM). Its 15.45 PPM mono and 8.95 PPM color printing speed are good, ranking in the middle of our certified, tested list. Additionally, the ET-8550 is remarkably cost-efficient with a high page yield (4978 mono and 3319 in color) and low running cost (0.4 cents/page).

ReasonS to Buy

  • Superior-quality printing
    • The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is superb for offices and families with its wide-format support, high print and scan quality, and huge page yield.

    • Its 5760 x 1440 DPI print resolution ensures even the tiny details are precisely visible. The oversaturated color prints look pleasing despite the average 6.48 dE color accuracy (ranking in the mid-third of our verified, tested list).

  • Great scanning quality
    • With the 1200 DPI scan resolution, text appears sharp, and colors look vivid.

  • Low running costs
    • The 0.4 cents per page running cost and the massive page yield are economical for vast printing needs (ranking in the top third of our verified, tested printers).

  • Sufficient print speeds
    • The 15.45 PPM mono and 8.95 PPM color printing speeds are sufficient for moderately-paced work environments, ranking in the mid-third of our certified, tested printers.

Reason to Avoid

  • Limited scanning features
    • Scanning features are subpar because of the absence of an automatic document feeder (ADF). Manual scanning is inconvenient if you scan often, and the 2-PM scan speed is too slow.

The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 and the Epson EcoTank ET-5850 are excellent for offices thanks to their impressive page yields and low running costs. The ET-5850, however, is markedly faster at printing and scanning, making it more suitable for fast-paced work environments. (ET-5850 offers 23 PPM mono and 18.1 PPM color printing vs ET-8550’s 15.45 PPM mono and 8.95 PPM color printing). For detailed coverage, check out this Epson EcoTank ET-5850 review.

The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 and the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 are SuperTanks apt for offices and families. But the ET-3850 stands out as the more economical option thanks to its superior page yield, lower running costs, and purchase price. (The ET-3850 yields 7885 mono and 4681 color, costing 0.3 cents/page). Nonetheless, the ET-8550 offers much higher-quality prints and faster color printing speeds. To learn if the ET-3850 is a good fit for you, read our Epson EcoTank ET-3850 review.

The Epson EcoTank ET-8550 is perfect for offices and families, but the Canon Pixma MG3620 is adequate only for family use. Its high running cost (8.83 cents/page), low print speed, and page yield (225 mono and 210 colors) make it unsuitable for substantial printing requirements. But at 1/10th the price of the ET-8550, this budget printer will fulfill basic needs. It also has higher color accuracy than the ET-8550. However, connectivity options are limited.
