Consensus

our Verdict

The HP OfficeJet 250 is very well-suited to mobile printing, thanks to its ultra-portable (15.0” W x 3.4” H x 7.2” D) construction and rechargeable, removable battery. This printer has a small 50-page paper tray and a 10-page automatic document feeder that supports effortless scanning.  This HP OfficeJet printer has a 600 DPI scanner and 600 DPI copier and prints high-quality documents with resolutions of up to 1200 dpi in black and 4800 x 1200 dpi in color. Its companion application, the HP Smart app, makes it easy to change settings.

Its relatively slow 8.6 ppm monochrome printing speed, 4.9 color ppm, and relatively high 6.3 cents per page printing cost result from an inevitable trade-off between the need for productivity and portability. It also has a relatively mediocre 9.15 dE printer color accuracy score and doesn’t support automatic duplex printing. If you need a mobile model with automatic duplex printing, see our Canon PIXMA TR150 review. However, the OfficeJet 250 printer is more than adequate for users who want a mobile printing solution.

ReasonS to Buy

  • High-quality prints
    • The HP OfficeJet 250 is an excellent choice for mobile printing. It prints high-quality text and graphics at resolutions of up to 4800 x 1200 dpi in color and 1200 dpi in black.

Reason to Avoid

  • Supbar scanner
    • Its 600 dpi, 24-bit color sheetfed scanner is tedious to operate, and the scans come out slightly skewed.

  • High printing costs
    • Its printing cost of about 6.3 cents per page puts it among the top 10 percent most expensive printers in our certified, tested list.

  • Slow printing speed
    • The HP OfficeJet 250 is relatively slow, printing at 8.6 ppm in monochrome and an even lower 4.9 ppm in color and ranking in the bottom quarter of the category.

The HP OfficeJet 250 is better suited to mobile use, thanks to its ultra-compact design and built-in rechargeable battery, compared to the HP DeskJet 3755, which is much bigger and doesn’t have a battery. It also has a lower printing cost per page and has a USB interface for direct printing from a USB storage drive, unlike the DeskJet printer.

Thanks to an ultra-compact design with a rechargeable battery, the OfficeJet model is more suitable for on-the-go use, and it prints directly from a thumb drive and boasts a sheet-fed scanner, unlike the Canon PIXMA, which has no scanner. The Canon printer produces better photos with more accurate colors, though. Learn more about the Canon printer in our Canon PIXMA MG3620 review.

With a much smaller 50-sheet paper tray, the HP OffieJet 250 is not as workplace-friendly as the Epson EcoTank ET-8500, with its bigger 100-page main paper cassette and additional 20-sheet snapshot-size paper tray. The Epson model also prints faster and has a lower printing cost. However, the HP OfficeJet 250 is by far the more portable option. Analyze the Epson printer in our Epson EcoTank ET-8500 review.
