Long-lasting battery life, comfortable design, and clear microphone make the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless headphones a good choice for most gamers. No customizable EQ or Bluetooth connectivity lessens their versatility.

Product Snapshot

Overview

First released back in early 2021, the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless is a mid-range, closed-back, over-the-ear gaming headset that boasts software-based virtual surround sound for a wider perceived stereo soundstage to provide better localization in games. Unlike some of the best gaming headsets available in the market today, this model comes with faux leather ear pads. And it does not feature any form of active noise canceling to block annoying ambient sound during serious play sessions. It also does not have any wired connectivity or in-line controls.

Unfortunately, despite having proprietary wireless connectivity, these headsets do not feature Bluetooth. But it does come with a detachable boom mic for Discord calls and in-game voice chats. If you need a gaming headset that offers a Discord-certified mic, visit our Corsair VIRTUOSO RGB Wireless XT review. You can replace the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless’ leather ear pads with velour ones.

Consensus

our Verdict

The HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless gaming headset boasts an overall balanced and neutral sound profile for a good audio experience. The headset offers a slightly bass-heavy sound for a greater thump to your game’s audio. Unfortunately, the companion software is lacking and doesn’t include any kind of graphic EQ for customizing, which is disappointing. The HyperX’s detachable boom microphone is a bright point with crystal-clear audio quality and excellent noise handling to block out ambient sounds.

With a weight of just 0.69 pounds, this gaming headset is lightweight enough to stay comfortable over long gaming sessions. It also features thick padding on the headband and ear cups for increased comfort, though the ear cup materials aren’t as breathable. The HyperX headset also features an impressive 30-hour continuous battery life.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Neutral Sound Profile
    • The HyperX Cloud 2 wireless gaming headset boasts an overall neutral and balanced sound profile straight out of the box. The headset’s even mid-range produces vocals with clarity and definition.

    • These headphones also offer a somewhat bass-heavy audio profile, adding some extra thumps and rumbles to your video game audio, especially during intense scenes.

  • Lightweight, Comfortable Design
    • The HyperX headphones weigh in at just 0.69 pounds, which is lighter than many other gaming headsets available today. This means you’ll be able to wear them for longer periods without experiencing discomfort or fatigue.

    • The ear cups and headband also feature thick, soft padding for increased comfort.

  • Excellent Microphone Quality
    • The HyperX Cloud 2 headphones feature a flexible and detachable boom microphone, which offers excellent voice reproduction for better in-game chat and clearer phone calls. With a tested 42.6dB signal-to-noise ratio, these gaming headphones are better at creating clear mic audio than most others on our aggregated list

    • The microphone also does an excellent job at blocking ambient noise from your environment so your voice isn’t overpowered on the other end of the line.

Reason to Avoid

  • No Customizable EQ
    • If you want to customize the HyperX Cloud 2’s sound profile, you’ll be out of luck since its companion software only offers limited functionality. More specifically, it lacks a graphic EQ entirely, so you can’t adjust any of the audio levels to match your preferences, which is disappointing.

  • Ear Cup Padding Isn’t Breathable
    • While the ear cups are comfortable thanks to thick padding, their faux leather covering isn’t very breathable. This can lead to increased temperature around your ears, which results in increased discomfort over longer gaming sessions.

  • No Bluetooth or Wired Connectivity
    • The HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless gaming headset only offers wireless connectivity via a USB receiver. You won’t be able to use Bluetooth with these headphones, meaning you can’t connect to your smartphone.

    • You also cannot use these headphones with a wired connection, which limits their overall versatility.

The HyperX Cloud Alpha is strictly a wired model, whereas the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless headset, as the name suggests, features proprietary wireless connectivity with a USB Type-A dongle. On the other hand, the HyperX Cloud Alpha headset offers no latency to gamers, but the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless does not support sound output through a wire for a lower audio delay. But the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless headset does have a much better mic for in-game voice chats. To learn more about the HyperX Alpha, make sure to visit our HyperX Cloud Alpha review.

The Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless headset has significantly more feature-rich native software (Corsair iCUE) compared to the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless’ Ngenuity app. And Corsair’s software is available for both Windows and macOS, whereas the HyperX Ngenuity app is only available for Windows users. The Corsair iCUE app also allows graphic EQ customization with sound presets; in comparison, the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless’ app only has mic controls and a surround toggle. Additionally, the Corsair HS80 RGB model features a better boom mic than the Cloud 2 headset.

The Logitech G733 LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming headsets come with cloth textured ear pads that are much thicker and more breathable compared to the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless’ faux leather ear pads and headband padding. And as a result, the Logitech G733 LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming headsets are significantly more comfortable for long gaming sessions in hot environments than the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless headphones. The Logitech G733 LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming headsets also have a way better native companion app that enables EQ control.

The HyperX Cloud 2 headset is the older wired variant of the newer HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless model, so they perform very similarly in terms of overall sound quality and have a similar design and build quality. However, the HyperX Cloud 2 Wireless is only compatible with PC, PlayStation consoles, and the Nintendo Switch, whereas the wired HyperX Cloud 2 model is compatible with every device out there with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Unlike the wireless model, the wired variant comes with a carrying pouch. Read our HyperX Cloud 2 review to learn more about it.
