The LG GX Soundbar’s clear dialogue, Dolby Atmos support, and reliable connectivity with no technical issues make it great for casual movies and TV show binges. But the subpar surround sound, Atmos, and low bass will not appeal to enthusiasts seeking a truly immersive experience.

Product Snapshot
Overview
Released in 2020, the LG GX Soundbar is a mid-range model that delivers excellent audio clarity with a flat frequency response slope that helps with vocals and dialogues for living rooms and home theater setups.
Just like the highest-rated speakers in the market, it gets as loud as 97.5 dB to fill large spaces. Moreover, similar to the most popular soundbars in the industry, it supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS: X for a perceived expansive soundscape.
However, if you don’t care about the DTS audio codec, do take a look at our Klipsch Cinema 800 review. Its port selection includes a full-speed HDMI In, an optical audio jack, and a USB port to play audio files from a thumb drive.
The soundbar also comes with a wireless subwoofer that connects via Bluetooth, which is the only available wireless streaming option, meaning it lacks Wi-Fi, Chromecast, and Apple AirPlay support.
But if you live in an apartment and can’t use a powerful subwoofer in your setup, make sure to check out our LG Eclair QP5 review.
Consensus
our Verdict
The LG GX Soundbar has reliable connectivity with no static or odd noises from the speakers and good latency (tested at 51ms through Optical, 74ms through ARC, and 86ms through Full HDMI In) with no audio delay.
It has Dolby Atmos, the dialogues are clear, and the bass range is strong except for the low bass, so the deep rumbles aren’t impactful.
The soundstage is as wide as the bar and sounds feel like they’re coming from precise locations, but the surround sound and downmixed Atmos are poor and hamper immersion. The remote is simple but not the most convenient since it isn’t universal.
Although the system is responsive to commands and has useful EQ presets you can control with an app, there’s no room correction feature.

The LG SP9YA’s 5.1.2 channel speaker setup performs better than the 3.1 channel LG GX Soundbar when it comes to soundstage and Dolby Atmos performance. Also, unlike the LG GX Soundbar, the SP9YA features Wi-Fi, a built-in Chromecast module, and Apple AirPlay support for seamless wireless connectivity from both Android and iOS. In addition, the LG SP9YA has better build quality compared to the GX, and it sports a room correctiouto-calibration tool that the GX lacks. However, the LG GX Soundbar does come with a more unique design, despite featuring a less intuitive user interface with less number of sound enhancement options.

Unlike the LG GX Soundbar, the LG SN10YG supports Wi-Fi and has a built-in microphone for voice assistants (native support for Google Assistant) to double as a smart home speaker. The SN10YG also features a much broader 5.1.2 channel speaker setup with a total output power of 570 watts (with Dolby TruHD), which effortlessly surpasses the GX Soundbar’s 3.1 channel setup (420 watts) regarding soundstage.

The Sonos Arc has a wider soundstage and better Dolby Atmos performance than the LG GX Soundbar (3.1 channel), thanks to its much more comprehensive 5.0.2 channel speaker setup. The Sonos soundbar also has a built-in microphone to provide native support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa and better build quality than the GX. However, at 97.5 dB, the GX does get louder and sports a full-speed HDMI passthrough, which the Sonos soundbar lacks.
