Top-tier testers were pleased with the Samsung Odyssey G5’s exemplary gaming performance and felt that its 165Hz refresh rate and low 3.5ms input lag were great for gaming responsiveness. However, the G5’s low contrast ratio was quite a downer, and its poor connectivity options also proved frustrating.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Samsung Odyssey G5 S27AG50 is a 27-inch mid-tier display that was announced into the market in mid-2021. It is an ultrawide gaming monitor with a decent 165Hz refresh rate and support for HDR content. While this may be typical for some of the best computer monitors on the market, the G5 is closer to being a highly rated gaming monitor than an office monitor. It has exceptional motion handling courtesy of its rapid 8.1ms response time, and it is also ideal for multitasking thanks to a 1440p screen resolution and a high 110 PPI pixel density rating. At 3.5ms, its input lag is incredibly low and almost as good as the Samsung G7’s 3.1ms.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Samsung Odyssey G5 offers excellent gaming performance, much to the delight of experts who put its 165Hz refresh rate and low 3.5ms input lag to the test. Product reviewers from Digital Trends found that it prevented screen tearing and that its support for HDR content gave it a slight edge over the Samsung T55. The testing team at Rtings was also happy with how easy the G5 was to adjust thanks to impressive ergonomics and also established that it had a peak brightness level of 475 nits.. Critics also liked its viewing angles and were pleased with its wide SDR color gamut covering up to 99.8% of the SDR color space.

Unfortunately, the G5’s low 1149:1 contrast ratio was quite disappointing, and the lack of a local dimming feature also contributed to blacks looking gray. Also, the lack of a USB port and the single HDMI 2.0 port was simply not enough for gamers.

ReasonS to Buy

  • High refresh rate
  • Low input lag
  • Wide SDR color gamut
  • High peak brightness level
  • Great ergonomics

Reason to Avoid

  • Poor connectivity options
  • No local dimming feature
  • Low contrast ratio

The Samsung G5 S27AG50 is an update to the Samsung G5 LC27G55T, and so the new G5 comes with new features such as an IPS panel that delivers better viewing angles compared to the old G5’s VA panel, which in turn offers a higher contrast ratio of 2997:1 compared to the new G5’s 1149:1 native contrast.

The Samsung Odyssey G5 S27AG50(This review) is a much easier monitor to adjust than the Samsung Odyssey G5 S27AG55, thanks to better ergonomics. The former also offers a much faster response time of 8.1ms compared to the latter’s 23.9ms, making it handle fast motion scenes much better. Both have 1 HDMI 2.0 port, but the S27AG50 gets a lot brighter than the S27AG55 as it has a peak HDR brightness level of 476 nits compared to the S27AG50’s 306 nits.

The Samsung Odyssey G5 is no match for the Asus TUF Gaming VG279QL1A since the latter features a higher 400 nits peak brightness level compared to the G5’s 350 nits, as well as two HDMI 2.0 ports as opposed to the G5’s single HDMI 2.0 port. The ASUS display also has two USB ports while the G5 has none and supports VESA mounting while the G5 does not.
