The Samsung POWERbot R7040 pleased testers with its wide range of automation features, low noise output, and high suction force. They also liked its maneuverability, but unfortunately, they could not ignore its lack of a HEPA filter and its poor performance on high pile carpets.
The Samsung POWERbot R7040 is an entry-level robot vacuum cleaner announced in 2017. It has a 0.3-liter dirt compartment and battery life that can last up to 67 minutes if switched to low suction mode.
The dirt compartment is easy to take out for easy emptying, and it is also equipped with a camera to help track its cleaning – something that’s not as common even among the best vacuum cleaners on the market.
Similar to most highly-rated robot vacuums, it can also connect to the Internet through WiFi, and as you’ll see in our Roborock S7 review, it can also be synced with either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to facilitate voice control.
Owners can also use their smartphone to direct it through the SmartThings app, but in the absence of an Internet connection, it can be remotely piloted through the included remote control.
Consensus
our Verdict
The Samsung POWERbot R7040 received praise from critics thanks to its automation features. Product testers from Rtings were delighted with how easy it was to sync it with the SmartThings app to schedule its cleaning.
They also liked how it maneuvered under furniture and felt that its 84% and 96% clearance of large and small debris on bare floors was OK.
Reviewers from Amazon who’d bought the R7040 commended its high suction power of about 3510Pa, which is more than most robot vacuums, as you’ll see in our Shark AI Robot review.
However, reviewers didn’t appreciate its lack of a HEPA filter, which, as is evident through our Shark APEX UpLight review, is present on the Shark APEX UpLight. They were also disappointed with its 18% and 14% clearance of large and small debris on high pile carpet.

The Samsung POWERbot R7040’s 0.3-liter dirt compartment is much smaller than the Roborock S4’s 0.42-liter dirt canister. However, the S4 offers a longer 199-minute runtime compared to the POWERbot R7040, which has a runtime of up to 67 minutes. The S4 also allows for virtual boundaries, while the R7040 does not.
