The TP-Link AX11000 is a router built with gaming in mind. It has an impressive 5GHz download, an awesome connection range, a wide selection of high-tech inputs, and is easy to install. However, it performs poorly in a 2.4GHz band and has high latency.

Overview

Released in 2020, the TP-Link AX11000 router is a top-tier, eight-antenna, triband router that runs on the 801.11ax wired specification. It supports many Wi-Fi6 technologies common to the best routers available, such as MU-MIMO, WPA3 wireless networking, OFDMA, and up to 160Hz bandwidth transmissions. Its download speeds are 460 Mbps on a 5GHz band and 65.5 Mbps on a 2.4GHz band. Its connection range reaches 150 feet and has a latency of 235 ms. Setup and settings are handled through the Tether Mobile app or dedicated TP-Link web interface, where users can access features like parental controls, gaming-oriented features, and bandwidth prioritization. Or smart features like the Smart Game Assistant. If you want to look into a more budget TP offering, check out our TP-Link Archer AXE75 review.

Consensus

our Verdict

The TP-Link AX11000 is a top-tier, tri-band gaming router that runs on an 801.11ax wired specification. It supports a lot of great Wi-Fi6 features, including MU-MIMO, OFDMA, WPA3 security types, beamforming, link aggregation, and backhaul. Download speed is good, testing at 460 Mbps, ranking it in the top half of tested routers. However, its 2.4 GHz performance isn’t great, at 65.5 Mbps. The connection range reaches up to 150 feet before the signal drops. However, latency is poor; at 235 ms, it ranks in the bottom 5% of routers.

The router is easy to set up and operate. Users can choose from either the Tether Mobile app or the web interface. Set up takes around 10 minutes. From there, they can set bandwidth priority, run diagnostics, set parental controls, and access smart features, like the Smart Game Assistant and Smart Connect, which control band steering.

ReasonS to Buy

  • Good 5GHz download speeds
    • The TP-Link AX11000 is a gaming-oriented router that performs well on a 5GHz; the download speeds clock in at 460 Mbps, which is rated in the top half of the category.

    • The router also delivers features that allow users lots of control over gaming bandwidth and support for MU-MIMO, 160Hz bandwidth transmissions, and backhauling.

  • Good connection range
    • The router has no issue reaching far spaces and can stretch to 150 feet before dropping a connection, which is in the top 10% of routers.

  • Easy installation and connection
    • The router can be set up either via the Tether Mobile app or the web interface and in total, the process of establishing a network takes about 10 minutes.

    • Both interface options make it very easy to run a connection test, download firmware updates, control bandwidth prioritization, and personalize bands.

Reason to Avoid

  • Poor 2.4GHz download speed
    • The TP-Link AX11000 delivers slow 2.5 GHz downloads, as speeds come in at 65.5 Mbps, which is in the bottom 25% of the category.

  • High Latency
    • The router struggles to establish quick connections. Latency speed shows the router takes 235 ms, which is very poor for a router and ranks at the bottom 5%.

The TP-Link Archer AX11000 is a more advanced tri-band router compared to the dual-band TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750. The AX11000 is ideal for optimizing bandwidths for gaming. (The AX11000 has faster 5GHz download speeds of 460 Mbps on a 5GHz band, compared to the AC1750, which is 299 Mbps. However, the AC1750 is faster on 2.4GHz, which measures in at 81.4 Mbps, compared to the AX11000, which is 65.5 Mbps.) For a great WiFi 6 gaming router, check out this TP-Link Archer GX-90 review.

While both are W-Fi6 devices, the TP-Link Archer AX11000 is a tri-band router compared to the more affordable dual-band TP-Link Archer AX21. The AX11000 has more impressive speeds, as it’s optimized for gaming. (The AX11000 has a 5GHz download speed of 460 Mbps, while the Archer AX21 offers download speeds of 309 Mbps. The AX11000 also has better 2.4GHz download speeds, which are 65.5 Mbps, whereas the AX21 has download speeds of 40 Mbps.) However, the AX21 has a much lower latency, coming in at 20 ms, compared to 235 for the AX11000. If you want to look at a cheaper WiFi6 router, we also have a TP-Link Archer AX10 review. Or, for a peek at a great tri-band router, we have a Razer Sila AC3000 review.

The TP-Link Archer AX11000 is a higher-tech gaming option, supporting WiFi6 technology, backhauling, and anti-malware tools, compared to the Google Nest, which is oriented for general smaller home use. The TP-Link also offers superior speeds. (On a 5GHz band, the TP-Link operates at 460 Mbps, and the Google Nest offers 332 Mbps. Then, on a 2.4 GHz band, the TP-Link model operates at 65.5 Mbps download speeds, and the Nest has 45.1 Mbps). The TP-Link also reaches further, with a connection range of 150 feet instead of the Nest’s connection range of 100 feet. If you want to compare this to a more gaming-oriented router, we also have a great Netgear Nighthawk XR700 review.
