A new app called Protector launched today in New York City and Los Angeles, offering on-demand armed security guards and drivers starting at $200 per hour, as concerns about personal safety rise following recent high-profile violent incidents.
Why it matters: The service fundamentally changes access to private security by making armed protection available to the general public through a mobile app, though its high hourly rates may limit widespread adoption.
Technical Features: Protector introduces several key innovations in personal security services:
- Advance booking system requiring 5-hour notice
- Choice of vehicle types including Escalades and Suburbans
- Customizable security personnel dress codes
Market Impact: The service targets affluent customers with premium pricing and options:
- Base rate of $200 per hour includes driver and guard
- Additional costs for extra security personnel
- Customizable motorcade configurations available
The app’s guards come exclusively from elite military and law enforcement backgrounds, including Navy SEALs, SWAT teams, and Special Operations Forces. All personnel are licensed to carry concealed weapons and remain armed while on duty.
“Ultra high-profile individuals like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have dedicated full-time protection teams, but for most people, navigating security options is more challenging than it should be,” says Nick Sarath, Protector’s 25-year-old founder and CEO.
Users can customize their security detail’s appearance, choosing between “Business Formal,” “Business Casual,” or “Tactical Casual” dress codes. The service requires advance booking of at least five hours and offers various vehicle options from Cadillac Escalades to Chevrolet Suburbans.
The app has gained significant attention on social media, with viral TikTok videos showing influencers using the service during New York Fashion Week generating millions of views. One video showcasing airport pickup service has reached 11.2 million views.
Looking ahead, Protector plans to expand to additional major cities while maintaining its strict vetting process for security personnel.
